3 SITES IN 2017!

Networking with several key partners, Love Out Loud is excited about supporting the inaugural Freedom School at Kimberly Park Elementary School which launched in 2012 and partnering to launch two additional sites in 2017: Anna Julia Cooper Center on the Wake Forest University campus and Trinity Moravian Church in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

We have been privileged to sit with leaders, staff and volunteers in the well-developed, strong Freedom School program in Charlotte, NC. They have already been an incredible resource and encouragement to the Kimberly Park team and to those of us new to the conversation. Check out their website for an overview of their program and sense of what's being accomplished across the city of Charlotte:

Recently, the Winston-Salem Chronicle did a story on the Freedom School at the Anna Julia Cooper Institute on the Wake Forest University campus:  You can also learn more on the national website of the Children's Defense Fund:

Perhaps, THE BEST WAY, though, to get a sense for the approach and potential of the Freedom School model is to visit a site during the summer. Dr. Amber Baker, principal, has been running a Freedom School at Kimberly Park Elementary for several years:

We are excited about the role this program can play (and has played!) in combating summer learning loss and investing in the next generation of students through this powerful and empowering approach--both the K-12 scholars who attend and the college-aged interns who form the backbone of the staff. Very exciting days ahead!!
