1st Serve Opportunities

Whether you're a "try-it-before-you-buy-it" type or just aren't exactly sure how you would fit with a certain organization or volunteer role - we strongly believe in the value of 1st serve opportunities for you. 

These are episodic, done-in-a-day (or less), little-to-no training required opportunities for you to serve alongside an organization before you sign up for trainings and checks.

City with Dwellings 

o  Overflow Shelter (Dec – March): A shelter opened through the coldest months of the year through partnering churches to provide as many beds and warm meals as possible for our homeless brothers and sisters

United Way

o  Point in Time Count (Jan/July): Twice a year we work to count the number of homeless individuals in our city, join us for one of two shifts (or both) to help us!


o  Sleep Out for Homelessness (Nov): Raise awareness and money for homelessness by sleeping outside with us at our event in November

Helping Hands

o  Reaching lots of needs including meals, hygiene supplies, clothing closet – for our community members in poverty. All Volunteers Welcome!

City Lights 

o  Help create bunk beds for families in poverty! (Supplies provided, or can be purchased by your organization!)

Love Out Loud

o  Uniform Mart: Work a uniform exchange as we facilitate trades, and extreme mark downs on uniforms for families of Speas Elementary (Local SMOD title 1 school)

o  100 Man Tunnel: Welcome kids back on the first day of school at Ashley Elementary with encouragement and a tunnel of high fives!


o  Join us during the week or on the weekends as we prepare healthy meals for families in our community (all ages welcome!)

HandsOn NWNC

o  MLK Day of Service Read-In Reading Buddy - As a volunteer for this opportunity, you will work with 1-2 children as a guide for 3 hours the day of the event. You will guide the children through each of our "service" stations. In addition, you will guide them to a reading station where you and the child will read a book together. Each child will be given at least one donated age appropriate book and one new civil rights themed book to keep. All volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session prior to serving on January 19th. 

Love Out Loud

o  Love Winston-Salem– partner with us every July as we distribute brand new, fitting shoes, books, and a message of hope to children in title 1 schools is WSFC 

o  Gift Mart(Dec): Serve with us at Gift Mart, as we sell reduced priced toys and gifts to families to help them provide Christmas for their loved ones

City with Dwellings 

o Day Resource Center – work in the resource center to help our homeless brothers and sisters prepare resumes, job applications and utilize computers. 

Pivot Ministry

o Partner with Pivot to provide lunch or teach a workshop to women in poverty looking for a new start.  Topics can be life skills, job skills or entrepreneurship – topics about which you are gifted, talented and passionate.

Ronald McDonald House

o  Make a meal for families with children in Brenner’s Childrens Hospital

SECU Family House

o  Make a meal for families with adult members in the hospital or in hospice that are staying at Family House

o  Help clean Family House

o  Bake Cookies at home (or at Family House) for current families

NC Diaper Bank

o  Join us Tue – Thur, 10a – 3p as we package diapers to be donated to individuals in our community, your organization can also host a diaper drive!


Love Out Loud

o  Joy Prom– join us in providing a prom for adults (16+) with disabilities in our community

o  World Refugee day festival (Oct)
